Oh no! The one thing that you would never want to associate with your computer has just happened! And now, you are staring at some antivirus screen in which you have absolutely no idea how it got on your computer… Well you have probably since guessed it, but you now have virus!

The cost of virus removal can be somewhat expensive, and especially in these economic times, you might be thinking of exhausting all other resources before paying some computer repair shop 200 dollars to do the job you were looking to perform for free! Now, before we begin, I do suggest getting the problem taken care of by a professional…

Alright, let’s begin!

If you still have access to the Internet, I would suggest downloading Malware Bytes (download by clicking here) to remove what it can. Everything I recommend will be done through safe mode with networking (if you need help accessing safe mode, or would just like to know what it is, click here).

Once in safe mode, run a full scan. This is going to take a little bit to scan every file on your computer, so I recommend you go grab something to eat. Hopefully that scan removed the majority of infections on the computer. If not, we are going to have to dig a little deeper…

Next, while still in safe mode, navigate to your Windows folder (usually it will look something like this, C:\Windows\)… From here, we will sort by the “Date Modified,” in which we can determine if any files have been altered in recent times. Look closely now… If there are any files that look out of the ordinary, you might want to delete that file (the file name “ldvjta42dsahl,” is an example of a file that a virus would create). If you have any questions if a file is legitimate or not, you can either move your cursor over the file to view the Company Name and File Description, or you can Google it. By moving your cursor over the suspicious file, you can view what company created the file and the description of the file (Whether it be Micorosft or even an Unknow Company).

If everything looks fine in the Windows directory, we will then navigate to the System32 folder (usually it will look something like this, C:\Windows\System32). Now, we are going to repeat the above steps. Sort by Date Modified, check for any strange file names, and delete.

Note: If you have any questions on whether a file is legitimate or not, please don’t hesitate to Google it! Google is a lifesaver, especially in situations like this!

The next step is to clear anything that may be running when Windows starts up. To do this, click start, and click run (use the search bar if on Windows Vista). Type in msconfig and hit enter. The two tabs we will be viewing are the startup and services tab. It is here where we will look for anymore entries that look misleading or strange. Once again, if you have any doubts, just Google it! This is why we use the safe mode with networking support!

After you are finished unchecking/checking what doesn’t need to be there/needs to be there, hit apply. After that, restart your computer into normal mode.

When the computer boots into normal mode, run your antivirus/antispyware scan one more time to be certain…  And congrats, you have successfully cleaned your computer from viruses!

Tip: I do recommend going out and purchasing an antivirus to protect you from any threats in the future!

According to Panda Security Labs, the month of September has shown a 15 percent increase of malware worldwide. This brings the worldwide average of infected PCs up to 59 percent! Over half of every computer in the world is infected! This is one of the main reasons I decided to offer free computer repair… If I can help a few people, it would definitely be worth it. Knowledge is power, and the more you know, the more you can do to prevent computer viruses. Taking a look at the Chart (taken from CNET.com), you can see where different countries rank for the percent of Infected PCs.

If you have a computer that is infected, feel free to use the guides on YoureTheGeek to help you out. If you have any questions or need any further help, feel free to comment and ask questions!

More and more people have been coming to me with questions about both their new and old computers, and the troubles they have been having with accessing the Internet. Well, after helping these people out with their questions, I decided it would be beneficial to tell all of you.

Expired copies Norton Security Software is known for blocking access to the internet. It may be a few months after the software expires, or even a few hours, but the software is known to restrict internet access. Solving this problem is quite simple:

1) Click Here
2) Save the Removal Tool so that you can use it on the computer with no internet access.
3) Execute the Removal Tool, following the steps, and entering the Captcha
4) Restart the computer when prompted
5) Internet!

I don’t want to start complaining about how a “New Age” phone took until 2009 to come equipped with features that were made available 10 years ago, so I will end there. But, it is finally here! The moment in which all 3G iPhone users have been waiting for… MMS! I was unable to update my phone with it yesterday, so I had to wait in anticipation. Well, I have updated the phone and it is working like a charm!

The Update takes only seconds, and all that is required of the user after the carrier update would be to power off your iPhone, and power it back on for the changes to take effect.

Have you installed a video card recently and realized that you now have no audio? It’s not an uncommon problem, and best of all, it’s fixable! A lot of ATI Graphics Cards are shipping with an High Definition Sound Card in them already, and if you weren’t paying attention during the install of that video card, you more than likely installed the HDMI Sound Card. To solve this problem, and get your sound working again, follow these steps:

1) Right Click on My Computer
2) Click Manage
3) Under System Tools > Select Device Manager
4) Under the Sound, Video, and Game Controllers > Uninstall “High Definition Audio Device”

Note: Right Click on High Definition Audio Device and Select to Uninstall

You may need to change the speaker properties back to the prior output device. In order to do this, navigate to the Control Panel. In the Control Panel, Click on the Sound Icon. From here you can Enable your other working sound device to the default device that your computer will use when playing back any audio! Enjoy!

I realize that the excitement of purchasing a laptop may be too much to handle, but please, “HOLD ON JUST ONE SECOND!” Remember that purchasing a laptop, no matter what the cost, is considered to be a big and important purchase! I know I have read the ad paper and thought about impulse buying more than once, and this is why I ask you not to! Before you go handing over cash and plastic to some salesman (or saleswoman), please take some things into consideration.

What are you using it for:
This is a question I would ask myself when thinking about purchasing a laptop. If you are the average Internet user and/or word processor, there are laptops that are built to suit your need. If by some chance you are more into video editing and/or gaming, there are laptops that will meet those needs as well.

The Specs:
I like to take into consideration the specs on the computer before I purchase it. The specs will give a lot of information to whether or not you might want to buy the laptop.  Things I like to take into consideration would be:

RAM - This is like caffeine for the computer
HDD - This is the storage space
CPU - Ability to execute programs (also known as the brain of the PC)
Video Card - If you are a gamer, you know why
Screen Size - Effects portability
Battery Life - How long you can go without charging the laptop
Extra Software – If the PC is bundled with any extra software such as Microsoft Office or an Antivirus
Look and Feel – Basically… Do you like the product?
What Type - Tablet, Laptop, or Netbook

Educate Yourself:
This is something I cannot stress enough. Before you go making an important purchase, it helps to know what you are looking for. Search around online and read reviews about the products you were interested in. When you are at the stores, don’t be shy to ask questions that you might have. Also, feel free to shop around! Other stores (online stores included) carry different products, and different sales people have different opinions. It just makes sense for you to have a lot of information in what you are investing your money into, then having little and buying something you aren’t satisfied with!

Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode of a computer’s Operating System. This mode is used to help user’s repair critical system errors that may be interfering with the normal operation of Windows. Safe Mode loads only the Operating System, and the drivers for the mouse, keyboard, and video display.

An Example:
A few months ago, Microsoft released a Window’s Update that would cause 64-bit Operating System’s to Blue Screen. The issue was actually fixed by booting into Safe Mode, and uninstalling the Window’s Update was causing the issue (for the one’s who care, the update causing the issue was KB973879).

How To Access Safe Mode:
When starting your computer, tap f8 repeatedly, until prompted to start Safe Mode. Then, you will be asked to select one of three options to get you into Safe Mode…

Safe Mode:
This option is used to load Safe Mode. However, no networking connections will be loaded.

Safe Mode With Networking:
This option is used to load Safe Mode, and by selecting this option, you will have access to the Internet.

Safe Mode With Command Prompt:
This option allows you to have access to the command line, instead of having access to Windows Explorer (which the other options allows).
